Sing Sing Prison has been appearing in books, movies, songs, and stories since it opened in the nineteenth century. Here are just a few of the places you’ll find the prison in pop culture and history.

Newspapers and Magazines:
Most early prisoners were from New York City, America’s, if not the world’s, preeminent city. The phrase “Up the River” was coined because prisoners were transported up the Hudson River to Sing Sing. The New York Times and other papers reported events at Sing Sing as if it were a part of the local beat and reporters had easy access to the prison. |
Little Nemo in Slumberland was a comic strip that ran in the New York Herald from 1905 to 1911. It told the tale of various adventures Little Nemo had while he was asleep, and he always woke up in the last pane. In this edition from 1910, Nemo and his companions attempt to fly to New York City in a dirigible, but land in Sing Sing Prison, instead.
