Dear Friends of the Sing Sing Prison Museum,
We began this year with the goal of starting work on building a Preview Center at the former prison Powerhouse. This goal remains our top priority. Unfortunately, COVID-19 caused a delay in our plans; however the pandemic and the summer of Black Lives Matter protests has shown us that our museum’s purpose of reimagining a more just society is more relevant than ever. We are pleased to report that despite the challenges, this year’s accomplishments are bringing us closer to our vision in unexpected ways.

- Developed an Augmented Reality, multimedia experience of Sing Sing Prison’s historic 1825 Cellblock to be launched in 2021;
- Completed major projects funded by the Andrew Mellon Foundation, American Express and the National Endowment for the Humanities;
- Worked with Columbia University’s Center for Justice on an oral history project that will inform the Master Narrative of SSPM;
- Collaborated with Ossining Public Schools to develop criminal justice curriculum, and conducted an intern research project with Pace University;
- Produced criminal justice webinars with expert panelists on contemporary topics including policing, the death penalty, COVID-19 and incarceration;
- Donated to a PPE drive for Sing Sing Correctional Facility;
- Created a master narrative of the history of Sing Sing Prison and conducted a collections survey to identify objects related to the prison;
- Joined and participated in a national consortium of prison museums;
- Served on the advisory committee for the Village of Ossining’s Comprehensive Plan and waterfront rehabilitation project.
